"We are almost there."It had been a long day. Zooming over the purple planet's turbulent mountain landscape, they looked back with satisfaction on the afternoon, strolling over dense fields as the seven black suns gradually warmed the ground.
“Can you tell me one more time, Mom, what it was like before?”
“Of course,” she said, “of course.”
And as she slowly let the planet cruiser glide past the light pink rubber trees and yellow clouds, she told her story one more time in peace. Then they came up with a new plan together, for tomorrow. They wanted to see the steps of Thaleus, and climb Quartz Mountain. When they got home, the boys almost immediately dived into their oxygen-rich sleeping cabins. She gave them a kiss and prepared to look at the moon before she went to sleep. She heard his voice softly behind her.
“Mommy, turn off the light, I can't see my dreams like this.”
For the photo series "Mama turn off the lights, I can't see my dreams like this" Katanic investigated her turbulent past in Serbia; a childhood marked by war and domestic violence. Her love for the science-fiction genre helped her escape from everyday reality.
In her fantasy she created her own world where she could feel safe.
Katanic works together with her children for this project. This series is an ode to the healing power of the imagination and the playfulness of children. In absurdist landscapes the past, present and distant future meet.
Petra Katanic graduated cum laude from the Photo Academy in Amsterdam in 2018. In 2017, GUP selected her as a New Dutch Photography Talent. In 2019, she became popular with her series “Mama turn off the lights, I can't see my dreams like this.” nominated for the Dutch Photographers SO Award.
